Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions was founded in 1982 as a contract-engineering firm. Lighthouse initially developed custom software solutions and applications for large corporations in real estate, construction and internal operation management markets. In 1989, one of the leading computer disk drive manufacturers in the world contracted Lighthouse to develop the first Windows-based contamination monitoring system for cleanroom applications. Within a few years, Lighthouse became the leader in the contamination control monitoring industry.

In 2001, with markets shrinking, customers freezing spending, and the outlook on the global economy very gloomy, Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions faced an even greater obstacle: they could no longer buy their core product. That’s when Chairman Dr. Tae Yun Kim made a radical decision that transformed Lighthouse into a totally new company.
Lighthouse is in the very high-tech business of contamination control – monitoring the ultra-clean environments needed to manufacture semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and other extremely sensitive products. After 12 years, Lighthouse was the leading seller of monitoring systems in the world. But the sophisticated sensors that Lighthouse sold with their systems were made by other companies; in 2001, those sensors were no longer available.
Facing options of either severe cutbacks or closing down, Chairman Dr. Kim chose instead to face the challenge head-on, and created a new business model, transforming Lighthouse from a sensor reseller to a sensor manufacturer. And not willing to settle for second-rate products, Chairman Dr. Kim was committed to making the very best sensors in the world.

The normal development cycle for established companies in this industry is 2-3 years for a single product. Lighthouse had no experience with the technology, and needed to develop an entire product line in only 12 months.
But Chairman Dr. Kim is no stranger to impossible obstacles. She faced and overcame tremendous odds throughout her life, from triumphing over ostracism by her family and society to breaking 5000 years of male-dominated tradition in order to become the first ever female Grandmaster in the Korean martial arts.
Using her motto, “He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me!” as a springboard for motivating her employees, Chairman Dr. Kim brought everyone together as a strong team. She worked with each employee personally to make sure that everyone had what s/he needed to succeed, and she motivated everyone to stay focused and not give up, no matter what.

Instead of letting the economy slow Lighthouse down, Chairman Dr. Kim took advantage of it. When competitors cut back on R&D and laid off their best people, Lighthouse hired the best of those people, and for the first time in their careers gave them a stake in the company and a voice in the product design. While competitors closed offices and slowed production, Lighthouse invested in brand new manufacturing facilities and built a new world-wide distributor network. While other companies cut back on training, Lighthouse sent engineers back to school to learn state-of-the-art technologies for the new products. The results of this effort have transformed Lighthouse and shaken the industry. The first products shipped in less than a year; More than 40 new products were developed in less than 2 years. More are on the way – including a unique new product line that the competitors all claimed was impossible. With Chairman Dr. Kim’s energy and vision, Lighthouse is constantly embracing change to build new levels of success. |
